Many believe that the journey of recovery ends at the completion of treatment, this is a common misconception. If this is true, then what exactly needs to happen after successful completion of an outpatient addiction treatment program? There are many concepts and areas to pay attention to during a journey of recovery from opioid addiction, or any addiction for that matter. In this blog we will discuss some of the major areas of focus for after treatment life. The main concept is to know that recovery is a lifelong process and will be something that a person will need to pay attention to for the rest of their life. This does not mean that recovery will consume someone’s life and the longer in recovery the easier it will get, but some attention needs focused there to prevent any potential relapses.
The completion of any part of the journey to recovery should be celebrated. Whether it is just the first completion of an in-patient treatment program, the completion of an intensive outpatient program, to the completion of the least restrictive outpatient treatment program such as here at Recover Clarity. Each advancement in recovery is a huge step forward to a better and healthier life and every step deserves acknowledgment. Often people focus too much on only the end goal and forget to take time to appreciate their progress. These little rewards and acknowledgments are crucial for continued success on a journey to recovery, whether this is from opioid addiction or any type of recovery. Then obviously the last stage which is completement of all treatment programs and the removal of maintenance medications, such as that of Suboxone, Subutex, Vivitrol, or Naltrexone is an especially huge success and deserves all the praise in the world.
Before the completion of any treatment program having a well thought out aftercare treatment plan is crucial. Aftercare plans should be individualized and may vary greatly depending on the type of recovery. For instance, one for alcohol should include avoiding festivities that include drinking and bars, where ones involving opioid addiction should ensure that other physicians are aware of the addiction and limit any narcotics in treatment when possible. An aftercare treatment plan should be worked through with the assistance of a therapist or medical provider at the person’s treatment facility. The purpose of an aftercare plan is to provide a framework for the patient as to how to handle any potential concerns with their recovery as they move forward in life. This is key to providing the individual with guidance in the event of any concerns with cravings, relapses, or difficulties in life that could affect their sobriety. Every aftercare plan is individualized to that specific person, but they all do share some similarities in the structure of the aftercare plan.
Some of the basic structures of an aftercare plan would include, but not limited to, outlining a list of resources the person has available to them, outlining their social support structures, lists of coping strategies the person has learned, and list of most concerning triggers that could place them in danger of relapse. As some, if not many, of these may change over time, this is still a good framework for a person to look back on if there is a need. And it is always important that any person that sought out treatment for any addiction including opioid addiction treatment knows that if any concerns of relapse are there, first and foremost they should seek professional guidance and treatment if needed. Many people may feel that seeking professional assistance is a step backwards in the journey to recovery, but this could not be farther from the truth. Even as simple as having a few counseling sessions prior to a relapse can stop any relapse from happening and is not a step backwards. We all have struggles in life and at those times having help through the trying times of life is needed, regardless of being in recovery or not. Those who were in treatment for Opioid Use Disorder, at times they may need to get back on Suboxone or other medications for a short period while life settles back down. This is not a step backwards, but a safe alternative instead of relapsing.
By successfully completing an opioid addiction treatment program or any treatment program does not mean that individual therapy sessions must come to an end. Not everyone will need to continue with their therapy, but this is never a bad idea. Assistance with a therapist is generally beneficial to anyone, regardless of their situation in life. Even something as infrequent as bi-weekly or monthly therapy sessions can do an immense amount of benefit to anyone, especially those on the journey of recovery. So why is continued therapy so beneficial if a person has recently and successfully completed their addiction treatment program?
Unlike that of other social support structures a person may have in their life, a therapist is a special support structure. Therapists are completely unbiased and can see things that are discussed in the therapy sessions for exactly what they are or most importantly help a person see reasons they are not conscious of. This allows them to help a person work through concerns in their life without any personal judgments and help others come to realizations quicker than they would on their own. As many social supports are amazing to have, if they have a personal relationship with you, such as with a friend, their advice is often biased. This is not to mean that those social supports are not of great benefit, and these will be discussed next, it just means that they will be in your favor as your friends will take your side. Also, unlike a friend, you can be bluntly honest with a therapist without any worry about hurting their feelings or how the discussed information may affect other areas of their personal life. And unlike that of friends or other social supports, the information discussed in a therapy session is completely confidential as therapists are bound by HIPAA laws.
Group therapies are another option for continuing therapeutic support after completion of an opioid addiction treatment program. It is important to know that group therapies are different than peer support groups, such as that of Narcotics Anonymous (N.A.). The main difference is that a group therapy is guided by a trained therapist and often will have specific objectives for the group session. The therapist will also guide interaction by those in the group session to ensure that everyone is actively involved in the group therapy. And the therapist will assist in guiding the group session when things get off topic and stop any cross talk that could be detrimental to others.
Another very useful continuation of therapeutic support is that of continuing to work with holistic guidance. Some of these practices can be worked on by oneself, but having a guide is also of great benefit. Holistic practices are amazing at supporting a journey of recovery as they are natural ways to improve one’s quality of life as well as decrease stress. Some of these practices include meditation, music therapy, yoga, breathing exercises, and mindfulness practices, all of which are greatly supported here at Recover Clarity. One of the most common errors many will have in their continued journey of recovery after successful completion of a treatment program is believing that they can go to recreational substance usage. This is one of the largest dangers that a person can place themselves in for potential relapse. Staying completely sober is crucial to preventing relapses and needing to reenter into another addiction treatment program, even if the substance usage is not opioids. Use of any illicit substance places a person back into the lifestyle of substance misuse as well as getting them back into the culture of being able to acquire substances. The thought here is that the person that will sell you cocaine or another illegal substance will often also know where a person can acquire other substances such as opioids.
As this is important to stay sober and on the journey of recovery, it is also important for the person to refrain from having social interactions with those that are currently misusing, or even recreationally using substances. Again, this places a person in great chance of relapse and the potential need for additional opioid addiction treatment or other types of substance treatment services. If someone that has successfully completed a treatment program finds themselves involved with others in active addiction, they should use their knowledge and success in their recovery to help guide those in need of resources to help them take control back over their life. Establishing a solid social support structure is very beneficial to maintaining the journey to recovery after completion of an addiction treatment program. Social supports can come from various areas. One that is often very beneficial to many is that of peer support systems such as with Narcotics Anonymous (N.A.). These peer support systems have been highly beneficial for many and provide some great assistance in recovery. First, those that attend N.A. often have been through similar situations in life, providing not only social support but support from someone that truly knows some of the things that a person has been through. In N.A. a person will establish a home group and have a sponsor. The sponsor is a person that is there for the person at any time and most useful during trying times such as struggles with cravings and can help prevent relapses. Some people may find the religious undertone of N.A. a barrier to this type of peer support, but there are non-religious or secular versions of N.A. for those individuals.
Other social supports can come from anywhere in life such as friends, family, co-workers, or anyone that you trust to be open and honest about your life and your past. This is not saying you must divulge everything about yourself to the person, but to be a true social support in a journey of recovery the support needs to know about your past addiction. And not everyone in your life must be at that level of social support. Even just having a supportive person for when you are stressed and having someone to talk to about everyday life is equally important.
Incorporating a healthy lifestyle is an amazing way to stay on a path of recovery. The simple concept is that placing a lot of energy and time into staying active and healthy is the opposite of active addiction or substance misuse, therefore making those areas of life harder to come about while being healthy. There are also many health benefits that will assist a person in general in life. One that many people are not always fully aware of is the mental health benefits that come along with being physically healthier. The better health we have the better our brains work, and the neural synapses will form. For those in recovery this can be a great defense against some triggers and cravings. Also, by learning to use healthy activities and exercises are methods of coping strategies for stress. Many in recovery have had a past where substances were used as coping strategies therefore replacing those with any healthy alternative is crucial in staying on the journey of recovery.
Being healthier will improve a person’s view of self-esteem. This will just improve the quality of life as we are healthier, we will be in better physical shape and often happier with our physical appearance. When these happen often people in general are happier in life which will spill over to other areas of life and the improvement will be seen in other areas such as with work, school, and personal relationships. Exercise also releases many neurotransmitters which have mental health benefits. During exercise it will trigger the release of both dopamine and serotonin, which both improve mood in general. Many substances that people misuse is often found enjoyable for the release of the same neurotransmitters. Therefore, exercise and physical activity are natural ways of getting some of the same mood-altering effects but have many other great benefits as well. Exercise will also help with problems sleeping and increase daily energy levels.
